I don't know the name for this particular kind of reed (suggestions are welcome!), but I do remember they were used as decoration when I was young. People actually put them in vases in their home. Come to think of it, I haven't seen that in a while!

we always called them cat-tails, and i remember my mother picking them and putting them in a vase too.
