On a beautiful Sunday, with nice white clouds, I took a ride through Amersfoort on my bicycle. Especially the defense perimeter of Amersfoort is beautiful when set against a nice sky.
First the Koppelpoort which is a combination of a land gate and a water gate and forms the old entrance for the city when coming in through the river Eem.

The "Lange Jan", also called "Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren" is depicted here as a Tower of Doom. You gotta love Gothic architecture in black and white! This tower was originally chosen as the central point of the Dutch coordinate system and is therefore still known as the centre of the Netherlands.
Below is the Monnikendam, which is a watergate that was built as part of the second city wall of Amersfoort, after its first period of growth.
The next two pictures form part of the city wall called "Achter de Kamp". From these it's quite clear this part of the wall was used for defensive purposes.
The last gate I took some pictures of is the famous Kamperbinnenpoort. This is a land gate that formed the original entrance to the city center. It is part of the first and most inner city wall.
Finally a old, quaint city street in the old center ring of Amersfoort. It's quite close to a site where they are now doing archeological diggings to gather more historic knowledge about the city.
